The Dangers of Mold in Your Ductless HVAC System

March 10, 2023

Most people are aware of the dangers of mold in their homes, but what many don’t realize is that this fungus can also be present in their ductless HVAC system. Mold growth in ductless systems can cause severe air quality issues and even lead to a host of health problems, making it essential for homeowners to take the necessary steps to prevent it.

Moisture is the main culprit behind mold growth in homes with ductless HVAC systems. Not only does moisture enable mold spores to thrive in the environment, but it can also cause dust particles and debris to accumulate on components like evaporator coils and air filters. As these areas become clogged with debris, airflow is impeded which leads to reduced efficiency - and ultimately higher energy bills as your unit struggles to maintain comfort levels.

When moisture levels remain high or fluctuate suddenly due to poor insulation or sudden temperature swings outside, you may also experience an increase in condensation buildup on cooling coils which can result in water pooling throughout the system - another prime environment for mold growth. To avoid this problem make sure insulation around your unit is up-to-date, have any damaged seals promptly replaced, and install a water detector device if possible so that you’re alerted if leakages occur within your system.

In addition to proper installation and maintenance practices, it’s important to schedule regular filter changes as part of your upkeep routine – preferably every three months or sooner depending on usage levels. Doing so will help ensure that dust & dirt don’t accumulate on vital components which might otherwise impede performance and invite mold spores into the system in search of food & shelter. Additionally, investing in quality air filters for use inside the house will go a long way towards keeping out airborne contaminants that could otherwise harbor mold growth within your home itself.
