Not Sure If It’s Time For A New Water Heater? Here Are Some Signs

Eric McPherson • November 2, 2021

Water heaters have an average lifespan of 10 years. If you leave them to break down completely, you will end up spending a lot of money replacing them. The worst of it all is when they break down on the coldest of days. Don’t let that happen to you and your family.

Are you not sure of when to get a new water heater? There are clear warning signs that will alert you to take action. Among them are rust-colored water, leaks, and water not heating up, which are all explained in more detail below.

The Age of Your Water Heater

If your water heater is more than 10 years old, it is time to get a replacement. If you are not sure about how old it is, check the serial number, usually found at the top of the heater unit. Visit the manufacturer’s website and input the serial number. You will get more information about the unit, including its age.

Leaks

You don’t even need a water leak detector to see that your heater is leaking. You may spot a puddle of water on the floor or see water coming out of your unit. Leaks are emergencies because the tank could easily burst, flooding your home. The best thing to do when you notice water around your unit is to shut off your device and call in an expert. In most cases, the professional will recommend a change of the valves, the expansion tank, or the entire unit.

Rust-colored Water

With continuous use, the steel in your water heater rusts. When this happens, you will see that the color of the water has changed. That rusty water is a clear indication that you need to change your water heater.

No Hot Water

Old water heaters lose their capacity to heat properly. They are unable to heat water due to sediment buildup. There is also a chance that your thermostat is misadjusted or that the heating element is broken. If you leave it unattended, it will get to the point where the water will not heat up at all.  Do not wait until it gets to that point. Call a water heater expert to take a look.

Noise from the Unit

Heating units may produce a little humming sound when they’re in operation, and that is normal. But, you should take action if you begin to hear knocking or popping sounds. This is a clear sign of a faulty unit.

If you are expanding your home, it is possible that your current heater will not accommodate a larger household. Water heaters have a capacity limit, and if you use one with a small capacity to serve a larger household, it will get damaged quickly. This is why your home renovation ideas should include a new water heater setup.

If you realize you need to change your water heater, don’t just walk into a shop to buy one because they happen to have water heaters for sale. Instead, get in touch with a professional who will listen to you and get to know the demands of your household before recommending a water heater.
